"Went Above and Beyond for us."
Went Above and Beyond for us.

We were travelling back from Naples to Bari on our final day in Italy. We had our train booked from Naples to Caserta and then connecting to the train from there to Bari. However, our train to Caserta was forced to stop due to a problem on the tracks. We were left waiting and arrived to Caserta an hour late meaning our connecting train had left.

This was the last train to Bari that night. We needed to get back here as our accommodation was here and more importantly our flight was due to leave from here back to Dublin at 6AM. If we were to miss this flight, we would have to wait 4 more days to fly home. We had checked all bus options and there was none.

We communicated this to the TrenItalia employees in Caserta. They understand our situation and went above an beyond to accommodate us. They organised for a taxi to bring us from here all the way to Bari (300km and a 3 hour journey). All of this free of charge. Thanks to them we were able to get back to our accommodation and we made our flight in time. I don’t know many national train services that would go to this effort for their customers.

We are beyond grateful.

"We booked tickets in advance for the…"
We booked tickets in advance for the train service in Sicily. DON’T as a tourist. One late train and missed connection. One train did not run at all and for another we boarded an slightly earlier train and were kicked off. The bus is a much better solution in Sicily. Faster and cheaper. Don’t book train with train in advance. They are un reliable and not flexible for tourists

"No entrance with bike"
We bought two Tickets from Pavia to Torino at 12.05 and two bike tickets at the ticket desk in Pavia. As we arrived to the train, we weren't allowed to go in the train, because bikes were not allowed.... :(

"Coming back from Verona"
Went to Verona with some friends today, got a ticket (so paid) the night before. On the way back I had to take the train of an hour early to get to my destination on time...and I was told that I had to pay for the ticket anyway this shouldn't happen. The ticket should be valid for the hole day and should depend in times like that...I was very disappointed for the arrogant way of communicating and rigid rule.

"Wish I could have rated lower one…"
Wish I could have rated lower than one star. Paid for a ticket which is the normal and topical process of any country. Conductor fines me 30 Euro for not validating. Come on guys. This would not be the first time a tourist has been caught by this. Maybe a big red flashing sign on the screen where you buy the ticket????? Like ‘our company is completely moranic and requires a stupid process to avoid penalties’😉

"TrenItalia stole $60 euro…"
Fined despite paying for a Ticket prior to departure. Fined 60 euro for failing to validate, which no one told me was necessary, it isn’t written on the ticket, they don’t tell you when your purchase it and no one announces it at the station. It’s basically stealing, I payed a full fare and was fined for doing so. This practice would be illegal in Aus/Germany/US/UK. If they do not give the customer forewarning of conditions of ticket they cannot issue a fine, this is basic consumer law elsewhere. This is a disgusting practice.

"Unreliable and bike unfriendly"
I arrived one hour and a half at Naples Central station with two bicycles. As soon as I arrived I located the information desk with my bicycles to ask if I could travel with my bicycles and if I needed to package them in a particular way. I carried with me all of the necessary tools to dismantle the bike and a case. I was informed I could simply take my bike on board the train.

When the platform was called 10 minutes before I departure I walked up to the gate to pass through. I was then told completely different information that I would not be able to bring my bike on board. This caused me an extreme amount of stress and confusion because I had already paid for expensive onward tickets to Paris and then the Eurostar to London. I then did not have sufficient time to use my tools to dismantle the bike and put it in the bag I brought with me. I missed the train and lost more than £800 euros arranging alternative transport and accommodation. I demand a refund and an apology.

"Scammers"
Scammers. Train from Ventimiglia to Torino got delayed over two hours. I should be entitled, according to their website, to 50% refund of the ticket. However, when I try to get the refund it says I am not entitled because the train arrived on time. If I had money I would sue you. But I guess it's great to scam people that don't have the power to do anything about it.

"What a joke"
What a joke,
the best to take your money and the last to give it back to you after they canceled trains at the last moment. 30 days to give answers on the reimbursement is not acceptable. The claim process is fully manual through a webform that does not give any visibility on the request once processed. creating accounts online does not serve and is super painful experience.

"Trenitalia – kind, helpful – willing to go above and beyond the call of duty."
Because I am an idiot, I left my handbag containing my passport and my wallet hanging in the bathroom at Rimini station. I answered an important call and while talking, got on a fast train to Milan to catch my plane home. About 20 minutes into the journey I finished my phone call and went to put my phone away in my handbag.

My stomach made the complicated flipping motion stomachs do when you realise something awful.

I knew exactly where the bag was. I could picture it – hanging on the helpfully provided little hook in the ladies’ loo.

I went to find the Capo de Tren and explained what had happened.

The Capo de Tren took me to the business compartment and asked if anyone spoke English. A lady put away her laptop and offered to translate for us. The Capo first called Rimini – the station master hurried over to the ladies’ bathroom. Si, he had found the bag. Si, he had the passport – was the Signora’s full name…?

I could get off at the next station and go back to Rimini to collect it. It was clear I was going to miss my flight. But no.

The Capo began to plan with the station master. He phoned the office in Milan. He looked up trains. He called another Capo de Tren. He explained his plan to the business passenger who explained to me. The station master would meet the next fast train and hand the guard the bag. The guard would bring this to Milan. I must go to the Asistenzia and sign some paperwork. They would escort me to the train and meet the guard. I would receive the bag and would then – if I ran – just catch a train to the airport which would get me there 10 minutes before the gate closed for my flight. After that, sighed the Capo, it would be up to luck.

At Milan I went to the Asistenzia. The were expecting me. They already had some paperwork ready for me to sign. They called the next train and confirmed the new Capo did indeed have my bag and were on time. Go and have a coffee – or try the station chapel if you prefer to pray, the Asistenzia lady winked.

As the train pulled in, a new shift member of the Asistenzia escorted me to the platform, helpfully filling in some details on the paperwork so I could just sign and run. The new Capo jumped off the train holding my bag ‘here it is,’ she waved. I tried to press some money into the Asistenzia's hand to thank him.

‘Please no,’ said the man, ‘it is just our job. It is our pleasure to help when we can. Now run for your plane’.
I made the flight.

It is impossible to overstate the great kindness and humanity of every single person in the team whom I met that day - and I met a lot! They were warm and sympathetic. They did everything they could to help. They made exceptional efforts for an idiot who had carelessly abandoned her own bag and who spoke no Italian and they were utterly charming while doing so. Thank you so much to each and every one of them – I am left in awe of the customer service of Trenitalia and true generosity of spirit of those who work for it.

"racism and greed"
my friend and i asked for day passes at the monterosso train station. we believed we had day passes when we were on a 3 minute train ride from vernazza to cornelia. while we were about to get off at cornelia, a bald man came and told us we did not have the right tickets, and fined us 105 euros. we were very shocked and said we had the day pass (which we believed we did). he then didn’t let us get off the train because he wanted to fine us, causing us to miss out stop. because of him, we had to get off at manorola. he didn’t ask any white person for a ticket, only me and my friend because we are people of color. he was being very racist and rude, and fined us even tho we had believed to have purchased the day pass and kept explaining this. also, we read that the fine should not have been more than $50, so he pocketed the money. disgusting.

"Website completely broken"
Website completely broken - keeps selecting trains for the day after the day I have selected. Translation tool to english hides some of the train times.
